Six killed in road accidents


At least six people were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Siraganj and Barisal yesterday.

Our Sirajganj Correspondent adds: Four people, including an NGO worker, were killed and five others injured in two separate road accidents in Sirajganj yesterday.

Three people died on the spot and five were injured when a Bogra-bound coal-laden truck coming from Chittagong skidded off the road and fell into a ditch as the driver lost control over the steering at 7.30am at the western side of the Nalka bridge on Dhaka-Bogra highway.

One of the dead has identified as Akkas Ali, 45, son of Goher Ali of Chandail village in Dupchachia upazila of Bogra district. Two others' identities could not be known immediately. The injured were taken to Sadar Hospital, police said.

Abdullah-Hel Kafi, 33, programme co-ordinator of "Charjibikayan Prokalpo," a local NGO, was crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus at 8.30am at Maijhail area on Sirajganj-Belkuchi road while he was going to Chowdhali for his official work from Sirajganj town.

Police sent the bodies to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

OUR Barisal CORRESPONDENT adds: A truck helper was killed on the spot after his vehicle skidded of the road and fell into a ditch while it was approaching a bridge at Rayerhut area under Banaripara upazila yesterday.

The victim was identified as Alauddin, 44, of Kashipur of Barisal city and his body was handed over to his relatives after post mortem.

Witnesses and police said The accident occurred when the truck was going to a brickfield at Banaripara from Barisal. Two pillars of the approach road of the bridge and a roadside telephone post were damaged.

Driver of the truck managed to escape.

BDNEWS from Keraniganj reports: A child was killed in a road accident at Dakpara in Keraniganj yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Rani, 5, daughter of Eskandar Bapari in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur.

Police and witnesses said the accident occurred when a speedy bus from Nawabganj crushed her under its wheels at about 10.30am while she was standing beside the road.

Rani died on the spot.

Police seized the bus and sent the body to Mitford Hospital for autopsy.
