Committee yet to submit recommendations

The advisory committee on the Strategic Transport Plan (STP) is yet to submit its recommendations on the study of the 20-year transport planning.A foreign consultancy group has prepared the plan for Dhaka city, which will provide directions for facing the future challenges in the transport sector. At the 8th board meeting of Dhaka Transport Coordination Board (DTCB) yesterday, Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in submission of the recommendations. The meeting decided that the advisory committee and the DTCB board will hold a meeting on the STP study soon. Talking to reporters, the mayor said it is taking time to finalise the plan as it involves a long-term strategy. The STP envisages institutional strengthening programme, identification of priority projects and capacity-building of the organisations concerned such as DTCB, DCC, DMP, RAJUK, BRTA, sources said. Sadeque Hossain, also the chairman of the DTCB, presided over the meeting attended by advisory committee member Prof Alamgir Mujibul Haque of Buet, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Dr MA Momen, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) Chairman Advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker. The meeting also reviewed the progress of the projects under the World Bank-funded Dhaka Urban Transport Project (DUTP). M Salauddin Ahmed MP and other DCC and DTCB officials were also present at the meeting.
