Dhaka committed to one China policy: PM

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday reiterated Bangladesh's firm belief in one China policy and expressed satisfaction over the progress made by the friendly country in various fields.

"China's cooperation for peace, stability and development in this region is very important to us," she said while talking to the visiting delegation of the Communist Party of China (CPC) led by Wang Jiarui, chairman, International department of the CPC central committee and also a minister, at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

During the meeting, the prime minister and the CPC team agreed to exchange experiences and work together on population control, education, employment and rural economy -- the common issues of the two friendly Asian countries.

Other members of the delegation are Aiping, director general, international department of the CPC central committee, and Zhang Xuyi, director, international department of the CPC central committee.

The delegation arrived in Dhaka on Monday on a four-day visit at the invitation of ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The delegation members are scheduled to leave for Pakistan today.

Khaleda, also chairperson of the BNP, and the Chinese delegation emphasised exchange of visits between the two parties to enhance understanding and help in improving the programmes of the respective parties.

Referring to their interactions with other BNP leaders, the CPC delegation remarked that the young leadership of the BNP is quite impressive and promising.

They told Khaleda that bilateral meeting with the BNP leaders on Tuesday was fruitful and would help further strengthen the relations between the two countries.
