On this day in the Hijri year 61, Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) along with the members of his family and close relations embraced martyrdom in the hands of Yazid's forces in Karbala to uphold the cause of Islam and the teachings of the Prophet (SM).

The day is a public holiday.

Different religious and political organisations have drawn up programmes to observe the day through holding discussions and bringing out Tazia processions in the capital and elsewhere in the country.

President Iajudin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina, in separate messages, said the supreme sacrifice of Hazarat Imam Hossain (RA) in Karbala teaches us to search truth and establish justice in every sphere of life.

Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private TV channels will air special programmes, while national dailies will publish articles highlighting the significance of the day.
