'Formulate nat'l policy to conserve heritage'

Speakers at a meeting have called for formulating a national policy to conserve the country's heritage.They also expressed deep concern over the loss of heritage in old Dhaka and other parts of the country. The meeting was organised jointly by the Institute of Architects, Bangladesh and Urban Study Group in the city on Monday, says a press release. The speakers including architects, scholars, academics, professionals and social leaders decided to launch a nationwide public awareness programme under the banner of 'Campaign for Heritage Conservation.' They also decided to form a broad-based advocacy group with people from different disciplines and support from different related institutions and organisations to help implement the programme. They said there is a lack of awareness among the policy makers, social leaders and the citizens as a whole regarding the value of heritage and its protection. A convening committee was formed with Prof Serajul Islam as convenor and Taimur Islam as member secretary. Members of the committee included Dr Hameeda Hossain, Khushi Kabir, Prof Nazrul Islam, Shaikh M Shaheedullah and Harun Ur Rashid.
