3 killed in'shootout' with cops

Two robbers and a top leader of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Janajuddho) were killed in two incidents of 'crossfire' in Dhaka and Jhenidah yesterday.Our Magura correspondent reported that outlaw Nurul Islam alias Nuru alias Rocky, 45, of village Kashimnagar under Jhenidah Sadar Police Station, was killed during a 'shootout' between his accomplices and police in Jhenidah early yesterday Police arrested Rocky at Baka village of Jibonnagar upazila of Chuadanga Wednesday noon and took him to the police station for interrogation. Following leads extracted from him, police took Rocky to Shuti-Durgapur village in the same upazila at about 3:45am yesterday to recover illegal arms. As they reached the village, Janajuddho operatives opened fire on them prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, police said. Rocky got caught in crossfire and died on the spot when he attempted to flee during the hour-long shootout, police said. Two constables were also injured in the shootout. A pipe gun and six bullets were retrieved from the spot. According to police, Rocky was accused in five cases including four for murder. In Dhaka, two robbers were killed in an encounter with police at Sutirkhal under Demra Police Station yesterday evening, according to the UNB. Acting on a tip-off, plainclothes police went to Sutirkhal and challenged a gang of robbers who were holding a meeting at about 6:00pm. The gang opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate. During the shootout, two members of the gang named Monir, 24, and Mujibur, 25, were shot and died on the spot while others managed to flee. The bodies were sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. Police recovered two pistols and 12 bullets from the scene.
