Germans look for respite

Jurgen Klinsmann has just three games to mould a German team capable of lifting the World Cup starting with a friendly match against the United States in Dortmund on Wednesday.

It is the final match before Klinsmann names his 23-man World Cup squad on May 15 and on the basis of the 4-1 thrashing by Italy last time out he has a lot of thinking to do.

Klinsmann has been heavily criticised for jetting back to his Californian home rather than staying in his homeland so the fact that the USA are up next is ironic.

"We need to turn in a good display against the US to get that Italy defeat out of our system," said Klinsmann.

"We are working towards June 9 and I am sure the fantastic fans in Dortmund will drive us on."

Germany have never lost in Dortmund, winning 11 out of 12 internationals, yet Klinsmann can expect a hostile reception after a public row with Borussia Dortmund defender Christian Woerns.

Woerns criticised the German coach for ignoring him for the Italy game in Florence and was unhappy that his omission was announced in an abrupt e-mail.

The defence was torn apart by Italy and the Florence fiasco persuaded Klinsmann to call up Mainz 05 defender Manuel Friedrich into the squad for the first time.

With Chelsea refusing to release Robert Huth the 26-year-old Friedrich is expected to start and has just one game to show the coach he is good enough for the World Cup.

Klinsmann has had a number of problems to handle in the build-up to this match with Torsten Frings, Mike Hanke and Sebastian Deisler all out injured.

Bayern Munich midfielder Deisler will miss the World Cup after a knee injury ruled him out for six months.

Bayern star Bastian Schweinsteiger has also been in the headlines after a local Munich newspaper claimed he was involved in match-fixing.

"Bastian needs to know that everyone is behind him," said Klinsmann.

The United States have had problems too and will be without their star player Landon Donovan.

"This match is a great chance for our players to show that they should be nominated for the World Cup," said US coach Bruce Arena.

The United States are pooled with Italy, the Czech Republic and Ghana in a testing World Cup group.

At the 2002 World Cup the USA lost 1-0 to Germany at the quarter-finals and the match is being billed as a revenge mission.

Germany want to rebuild their flagging confidence and have just two more matches after the US game.

Klinsmann's troops face Japan in Leverkusen on May 30 with Colombia the next test in Monchengladbach three days later.

Germany then open the 64-match World Cup in Munich on June 9 against Costa Rica.
