Mystery shrouds death of accused in custody

Mystery shrouded the death of a remanded accused in police custody in the port city early yesterday.

Family members alleged that Amir Hossain, 32, died following police torture as marks of injuries were found in his throat.

Rubi Akhtar, victim's wife, said they would file a murder case in the court accusing the police.

" When I went to police station on Sunday night, SI Sumit demanded Tk 2 lakh for his release and threatened to kill my husband in crossfire if I fail to meet his demand. But I could manage only Tk 2 thousand and gave it to the SI," Rubi alleged.

Police however denied the charge.

They said Amir, who was under a two-day remand after his arrest on Saturday, committed suicide with a broken glass.

A joint team of Khulshi and Doublemooring Police Stations of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested Amir, a butcher by profession, from near his residence at Dhanialapara in the city.

Sources said a team of Khulshi police led by SI Sumit went to the residence of Amir to recover arms on Tuesday night.

Family members were forced to stay outside during the search.

A few minutes later when police came out of the residence, Amir was bleeding profusely.

At around 11.30 of the same night, he was admitted to casualty unit of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries at around 4.45am.

Amir's body was kept at the CMCH morgue till noon amid police guard.

Asked how Amir could commit suicide when he was handcuffed, police failed to give any satisfactory answer to journalists at the morgue.
