Expat shot dead

An expatriate youth was gunned down at Mirpur under Pallabi Police Station in the city yesterday.

The victim was identified as Kalimuddin, an expatriate living in London. He hailed from Sylhet.

The criminals riding a motorbike shot Kalimuddin, 30, while he was taking tea at a stall near Mirpur Section 11 ½ bus stand, leaving him dead on the spot.

Kalimuddin came out of his Shewrapara residence at noon receiving a phone call from an unidentified caller.

Police recovered a Nokia cellphone set and Tk 7,800 in cash from behind the body of Kalimuddin.

Pallabi police quoting the victim's family said Kalimuddin has two wives. The elder one lives in London and the younger one in Dhaka. Rana Chowdhury, brother of younger wife, threatened to kill him on March 19, police said. Kalimuddin lodged a general diary with Mirpur Police Station in this connection, police added.

Police said younger wife Lucky Chowdhury filed a case against Kalimuddin on September 9 last year with Uttara Police Station under the 'Women and Children Repression and Prevention Act'. Kalimuddin was arrested following the filing of the case and was in jail. He was released on bail on March 9.

Victim's family members suspect that second wife's family might have been involved in the killing, police added.
