The persons who filed two cases against Shahin Sultana Shanta, victim of March 12 police brutality during a 14-party protest progra-mme, used false addresses for their houses, which has triggered suspicion that the cases were filed to harass Shanta and her family members. No one named Firoz Mia or Daud Mia was found at 79/1 Kalyanpur and 1/5 Satmasjid Road, the addresses mentioned in the complaints filed on Wednesday. Meanwhile, one Jasim Uddin Molla, a bus-driver, filed a third case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) court accusing Shanta of taking part in setting a passenger bus ablaze during the 14-party protest programme on March 12. Shanta alleged that the police raided the houses of the witnesses of the cases filed by her and picked a witness named Zakir. Shanta along with her lawyer husband Advocate Atiur Rahman yesterday appeared before the High Court and secured anticipatory bails in all three cases. Shanta had sued 28 policemen, including two deputy commissioners, for brutally assaulting her on March 12. The Daily Star correspondent yesterday visited 79/1 Kalyanpur, the address used by Mohammad Firoz Mia in his complaint to the CMM Court, but found nobody by that name. Firoz, in his complaint alleged that Shanta and her husband entered his house at 79/1 Kalyanpur on March 10 and snatched Tk 45,000. Mohammad Ismail, who claimed to be the owner of the plot housing several shops and factories, confirmed that he had no tenant by the name of Firoz Mia. Nurul Amin, secretary of the local kitchen market cooperative, meantime said the holding number of the plot is fictitious. "The plot is on khas land and its occupiers have created the holding number themselves--it was not issued by the Dhaka City Corporation," said Nurul Amin. Another neighbour said a police officer often goes there to meet owner Ismail. Ismail, however, said the police officer is his relative. At 1/5 Satmasjid Road, the address used by Daud Mia in his complaint, this correspondent found a businessman named Daud Ahmed Chowdhury who denied having any knowledge of the case. "I am a simple businessman and do not know anything about it," he said. Checking every business house in the four-storey building at the address, including eight shops on the ground floor, no one was found named Daud Mia who accused Shanta and her husband of extortion, alleging that the couple demanded Tk 100,000 and extorted Tk 20,000 from him on March 11. Barrister Amirul Islam, counsel for Shanta and her husband, yesterday said the police advised to file the false cases in an act of vengeance because the couple had filed cases against two deputy commissioners of police.
