BNP's reply to AL letter in two days
Staff Correspondent
Ruling BNP is going to write back to the opposition Awami League (AL) within two days about the proposed committee to discuss the opposition demand for reforms in the caretaker government and electoral systems. Prime Minister Khaleda Zia met five senior ministers yesterday afternoon and discussed the formation of the committee as well as the reply to AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil's letter, which was sent to his counterpart in BNP Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan on March 22. The meeting decided that the committee, which will comprise 10 to 12 members, will include both MPs and non-MPs as well as members from the allies of both BNP and AL. Consequently, AL's allies, who do not have representations in parliament, will now have a place in the committee alongside the four-party alliance partners Jamaat-e-Islami, Islamic Oikya Jote and Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP). Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman, Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Health Minister Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Agriculture Minister MK Anwar and Social Welfare Minister Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed were present in the meeting. The opposition's anti-government movement was also extensively discussed at the meeting. On March 22, Abdul Jalil wrote a letter to Bhuiyan asking for clarification on some of the points in Bhuiyan's letter that was sent to AL on March 20 seeking names for the committee.
