Opposition to finalise draft letter to BNP today

A committee of the 14-party opposition alliance sits today to finalise draft of reply to the BNP secretary general's invitation letter for dialogue on reforms to the caretaker government and electoral systems.

The 7-member committee could not meet yesterday due to the illness of 14-party Co-ordinator Abdul Jalil.

Gathering at Jalil's residence in the morning, the committee will finalise main components of the letter and submit the final draft to Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina for approval.

Jalil is to talk with BNP Secretary General Mannan Bhuiyan before sending him the letter in a couple of days.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Haque Inu and a member of the committee said they would reach a decision over BNP's alliance partner Jamaat-e-Islami.

The left-leaning allies of the opposition camp as well as many AL leaders were opposed to talking reforms with Jamaat man or any other anti-liberation politician.

"After settling the issue, we will be able to go on the replying Mannan Bhuiyan's letter," he added.

The other members of the committee are AL leaders Tofail Ahmed and Suranjit Sengupta, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, Pankaj Bhattacharya and Enamul Haque.
