Staff Correspondent
Senior leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), frustrated over Awami League chief's decision to elect students aged under 29 years to the BCL executive committee, beat a general secretary candidate in front of Sheikh Hasina's residence at Dhanmondi last night.Sources said around 1,500 BCL leaders and activists assembled at Shudha Sadan to know about the decision of a meeting over reconsideration of the age limit for executive committee members. They damaged three vehicles, a car and two micro buses parked near the house, and chased two young BCL leaders at about 11:30pm. The senior leaders turned violent after some Awami League leaders including Joint General Secretary Obaidul Quader and Organising Secretary Abdur Rahman told them that Hasina stuck to her earlier decision about the age of the candidates. Agitated BCL leaders beat Abdul Quiyyum, a general secretary candidate, when he was campaigning for vote. Besides, senior BCL leaders staged a demonstration in front of their party's central office on Bangabandhu Avenue around 11:00pm protesting the decision. Sources said some of them were saying that they would disrupt the 25th council of BCL slated for today.
