Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
Tension is running high in Sylhet city over an Islamic group's threat to foil a charity concert at Sylhet Stadium at 3:00pm today.Anjumane Talamije Islamia vowed to lay a siege to the venue to thwart the concert meant for raising money for the acid victims. It had earlier called for hartal today but backed off from its position yesterday. The group held a rally at Court Point area and brought out a procession yesterday denouncing the concert. Sylhet city unit of Khelafat Majlish, a partner of ruling BNP's coalition alliance Islami Oikya Jote, also held a meeting yesterday protesting the concert. Acid Santrash Nirmul Committee, a local voluntary group that arranged the concert, however, plans to go ahead with the programme this afternoon. The concert, earlier slated for February 28, was cancelled due to the opposition of local religious groups. Noted singers Kumar Biswajit and Mumtaj, and promising young artistes Beauty, Nolok, Rajib, Sonia and Rinku, among others, are scheduled to perform at today's concert.
