Inter-University Debate Competition
'Separate judiciary to curb corruption'

Speakers at a debate competition underscored the need for separation of the judiciary from the executive to curb corruption in the country.

They also said if the judiciary itself can be freed from corruption and it can perform judicial responsibility independently, the accountability of the administration will be ensured.

They were speaking at the 'Inter-University Debate Competition' jointly organised by Law Department of Dhaka University (DU) and Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) held at the British Council Auditorium in the city yesterday.

Arranged in the parliamentary system, the speakers of the opposition argued that separation of the judiciary is not enough rather other measures should be adopted following other countries.

The programme is aimed at making the young generation aware of the corruption in the country and the role of law and judiciary in this regard, said the organisers.

The organisers also expressed hope that the young generation would play a vital role in combating corruption.

Inaugurating the function, Prof Dr Taslima Monsur, chairman of the Law Department (DU), said, "Corruption is the main obstacle to investment in the country."

Dr Asif Nazrul, Advocate Elina Khan, Barrister Imam Hossain, TIB Chairman Prof Muzaffer Ahmed, TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman and Dean of Law Faculty Prof Borhan Uddin Khan also attended the function.

Law Department of Dhaka University became the champion while Law Department of Rajshahi University finished the runner-up among the eight groups coming from Stamford University, Northern University, Eastern University, South East University, Islami University, Kushtia and Chittagong University.
