Reforms Dialogue Committee
14-party names 5 AL leaders today

The Awami League-led 14-party opposition line-up sends a letter to the BNP secretary general today, nominating five representatives to his proposed 10-member government-opposition committee to discuss the caretaker government and electoral reforms.

The opposition combine will name five AL policymaking-level members, as BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil have agreed through correspondence, sources said.

According to them, AL Presidium members Abdur Razzak MP, Tofail Ahmed, Kazi Jafrullah MP and Suranjit Sengupta MP, and Jalil will represent the 14-party alliance. AL Acting GS Obaidul Quader may replace Jalil if the latter's health condition does not improve.

The opposition camp finalised the draft of the letter yesterday at a meeting at the AL central office in Bangabandhu Avenue.

Meeting sources said AL leaders will place the draft to Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina this morning for approval. They will tell the AL allies about the final selection at another 14-party meeting at 12:00noon today at the Bangabandhu Avenue office, before sending the letter to Mannan Bhuiyan.

After the meeting, Obaidul Quader told The Daily Star that they are likely to send the letter today but refused to disclose the names of the five chosen ones.

Obaidul sounded sceptical about the discussion, saying when the prime minister has rejected their reform demands what result would come from it. People have already expressed doubt about any positive outcome of the dialogue, he added.

Sources said in today's letter AL will clearly restate its position on militancy and fundamentalism, and also urge the BNP secretary general to maintain the same.

"We have made the people aware about militants and fundamentalist forces, and we hope you will agree with our stance," an opposition leader quoted the draft letter as reading.

"We are sending five names from Awami League on behalf of the 14-party opposition combine. Please send five names from BNP on behalf of the four-party alliance," he further quoted the letter, adding it will urge Mannan Bhuiyan to hold a meaningful discussion as early as possible for the interest of the people.

Yesterday's 14-party meeting also discussed details of the preparations for the April 19 sit-in programme in front of the Prime Ministers' Office.

Tofail Ahmed, Obaidul Quader, Motia Chowdhury, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Haque Inu, Dilip Barua, Bimal Biswas, Saifuddin Ahmed Manik and Abdus Samad attended the meeting, among others, with Abdur Razzak in the chair.
