Hartal observed to protest Nizami's Satkhira visit

A dawn-to-dusk hartal was observed partially in Satkhira yesterday to protest Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Industries Minister Matiur Rahman Nizami's visit to the district.

The Satkhira unit of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad and Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee called the shutdown supported by the 14-party opposition combine.

Most of the business establishments remained closed till 12 noon and vehicles were off the road during the hartal hours. No untoward incident was reported.

The leaders and activists of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, Nirmul Committee and the 14-party brought out a procession in the town in support of the hartal in the morning.

Carrying black flags, the protesters paraded the streets and chanted slogans against Nizami, calling him a war criminal.

Later, they held a rally at Shaheed Rimu Square in the town with Abul Khair in the chair.

Engineer Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Nazrul Islam, Advocate Mustafa Lutfullah, Kazi Riaz and Enamul Haque addressed the rally among others.

The speakers said Nizami was a collaborator of the Pakistani army who killed freedom loving innocent people during the Liberation War in 1971. They also urged the people to be united to oust the fundamentalists and communal forces.

The Muktijoddha Sangsad and Nirmul Committee are observing a three-day agitation from Friday that includes black flag processions, human chain and rally.

Nizami addressed two public meetings at Assasuni and Shyamnagar upazilas on Friday and one at Satkhira Government High School ground yesterday afternoon.
