Probe Kansat killings, punish culprits
Protest rallies in districts demand


The Awami League-led 14-party opposition yesterday held rallies and brought out processions in several districts protesting the killings in Kansat and demanding arrest and punishment to persons responsible for this.

They called upon the people to intensify the ongoing agitation to dislodge the government.

Our Barisal Correspondent reports: The 14-party opposition alliance brought out a silent procession in the divisional city, expressing its solidarity with the people of Kansat and demanding punishment to those responsible for the killings.

At least 24 people were killed in Kansat in last two months as they agitated for smooth power supply for irrigation.

The procession starting from Russel Square in Barisal city paraded the thoroughfares and terminated at the same venue with a rally.

The speakers said killing of people demanding power supply for irrigation is unprecedented in the country. Such incidents prove that this government wants to cling to power anyhow, regardless of people's sufferings and the national economy.

This government should be dislodged in the greater interest of the country they said and called upon the people to intensify the ongoing agitation to topple it. They demanded a judicial probe into the incident.

This government's slogans to raise production are simply bluff, they said. A Correspondent from Pabna reports: The 14-party opposition alliance brought out a silent procession in the town and held a rally yesterday as part its countrywide agitation programme to protest the Kansat killings.

The processionists wore black badges and carried black flags.

Our RU Correspondent reports: Student fronts of different political parties held rallies and brought out processions on Rajshahi University campus yesterday protesting the Kansat killings.

Progotishil Chhatra Jote (PCJ) held its rally in front of the Central Library, where speakers said this government killed people for demanding power for irrigation. This shows the he alliance government has taken recourse to repression to cling to power anyhow, they said.

It has not yet formed any committee to probe the matter, they said.

PCJ leaders demanded immediate arrest and punishment to the killers.

The PCJ also expressed its solidarity with the people of Kansat and their 14-point demand including uninterrupted power supply.

The rally was followed by a procession on the campus.

The RU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at its rally in front of the central library premises said the BNP-Jamaat government has nomoral right to cling to power after killing farmers for demanding power supply.

They also alleged that Rajshahi Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu local lawmaker and the leaders of BNP and Jamaat are responsible for the Kansat incident.

They also demanded compensation the victims' families.

Rajshahi city units of Banglad-esh Chhatra Union and Chhatra Moitree jointly held a protest meeting at the zero point demanding immediate arrest and punishment to persons responsible for the Kansat killings.
