PM returns home


Prime Minister (PM) Khaleda Zia returned home early yesterday ending her four-day visit to Turkey.

Minister, chiefs of the three armed forces, diplomats and senior civil and military officials greeted the PM as she arrived at Zia International Airport at 1:54am.

Earlier, she was given a hearty send off when she left Istanbul for Dhaka Saturday evening. Turkish Minister for Cultural Affairs Ninet Chubukchu and Governor of Istanbul Maummer Guler waved goodbye to the PM at the Kamal Ataturk International Airport.

Khaleda left for Ankara on Wednesday on a four-day visit at the invitation of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. She was the first prime minister of Bangladesh to visit Turkey.

Khaleda led the Bangladesh side at the official talks with Turkey on Thursday where the two countries agreed to enhance bilateral trade and investment.

The PM attended a banquet hosted in her honour by her Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan and addressed a meeting of business leaders. She also formally unveiled the plaque of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Avenue in Ankara.

Khaleda went to Istanbul from Ankara on Friday and called on Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. She also attended a dinner hosted in her honour by the Governor of Istanbul.

The PM led a 34-member delegation to Turkey. Her delegation included Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan. A six-member business team also accompanied the PM.

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Health and Family Welfare Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dhaka City Corporation Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Political Secretary to the Prime Minister Harris Chowdhury and State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar were present at the airport to receive the PM.
