Making calls to mobile phones from Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB) land phones is getting costlier as the state-owned operator will charge Tk 1.50 per minute from April 19.Presently, Tk 1.50 is charged for five minutes talk on both fixed and mobile phones. Under the new tariff rate, an inter-district caller will not have to pay additional charges as the entire country would be treated a single zone and there will be no peak and off-peak rates. However, charge for land phone-to-land phone call will remain unchanged. The call from a BTTB land phone to a mobile phone can also be made from a BTTB fixed phone that has only local call facility. "Users across the world pay more for land phone-to-mobile phone calls than the land phone-to-land phone ones, but the BTTB did not go for this typical charging for a long time," said a BTTB official. The finance ministry in January approved the BTTB proposal for increasing the call charge submitted to it on December 22 last year. Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) recently gave its approval to the new tariff rate.
