2 killed in nor'westers


Two people died and ten others were injured as nor'wester lashed seven villages of Mollahat, Kachua and Chitalmari upazilas of Bagerhat district and Terokheda upazila of Khulna district on Friday night.

The dead are Lacchu, 18, and Sumon, 4, of Patla village under Terokheda upazila. Of the injured, four were admitted to Terokheda Upazila Health Complex, while the remaining six were given first aid.

The storm started lashing the upazilas of the two districts at 9:30pm and lasted for 25 minutes. It also damaged about 200 tin-roofed houses, uprooted a large number of trees and snapped electricity lines.

According to the deputy commissioners of Khulna and Bagerhat, the nor'western accompanied by hailstorm has caused extensive damage to standing crops and monsoon fruits such as mangoes, litchis and jackfruits.

Terokheda upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) said a portion of Induhati Degree College collapsed during the storm.
