Double murder in Shyampur

Two people, one of them a re-rolling mill worker, were shot dead near Dhaka Match Factory in the city's Shyampur area last night in what seemed to be a desperate terrorist act.

The police could not say anything about the motives behind the double murder in one of the most densely populated areas of the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (East) Mahbub confirmed the deaths but could not give detailed information immediately as he was rushing to the scene.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Kalu Mia, 35, a re-rolling mill worker, and Jamal, 35, whose identity could not be ascertained immediately. Both were shot dead in a slum near the Dhaka Match Factory.

An earlier report said Kalu Mia was called out of his residence by some unknown assailants in the evening and later his body was found near the factory.

Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared him dead at 9:15pm. Bullets hit Kalu in the right eye and forehead.

Jamal's body could not be traced till 10pm.

Shyampur police said they heard about the incident and sent their force to the scene.
