Moudud tells of fake voters in his constituency

Law Minister Moudud Ahmed yesterday alleged that the draft voter list has had fake voters in his constituency, adding to the controversy over the new voter list.

In an interview on private satellite channel ATN Bangla, he said some 400 people in Noakhali-6 constituency have been listed as voters simultaneously in three different places.

Moudud, who first came to know about the anomalies from the grassroots level BNP activists, said he himself had detected the irregularities while visiting the constituency last week.

"They are listed as voters in areas under three different polling stations so that they can vote at all three centres, one after another."

He described the incident as a gross irregularity and said he has already made a complaint to the Election Commission (EC), the ATN Bangla reported.

This sort of ill practice could be detected if the entire voter-listing process is properly scrutinised by the field level workers, the minister added.

When his attention was drawn to the EC's not replying to any of the allegations regarding the voter list, he said, "We can't give any directions to the Election Commission as it is a constitutional body."

He however said he hopes the commission will address the questions raised.
