One killed in 'encounter' with cops

A leader of Panna Bahini, the Padma char-based gang in Rajshahi, was killed in an encounter with police and his accomplices at Bangali Char in Bagha upazila early yesterday.

Jahurul, a close aide to the leader of the gang Panna, was in charge of the chars of Rajshahi and Kushtia districts, said Abdullah Al Mahmood, superintendent of police in Rajshahi.

Police said Jahurul was arrested at Baliaghata in Natore on Thursday night.

Following his information, a police team took him to Bangalir Char to recover hidden arms. But as they reached there his accomplices started firing towards the team.

Police retaliated which led to a gunfight. Jahrul was caught in the line of fire as he tried to escape. He was rushed to a hospital in Bagha but the on duty doctors declared him dead.

An accused in eight cases including four for murder, Jahurul, the police say, had led the triple murder at Char Fatepur on April 20.

A country shutter gun and two bullets were recovered from the spot, police said.
