Ashraful Islam Shishu and Rasel Mahmud Jimmy produced spectacular late goals as Bangladesh handed a 2-0 defeat on Hong Kong to become unbeaten champions in the Jamuna Bank Asian Games qualifying round hockey at the Maulana Bhasani National Stadium yesterday. The victory helped Bangladesh national team to achieve their best success in any international meet as the International Hockey Federation recognised the seven-team qualifiers as an international tournament. The triumph against the South East Asian nation in the final game also brought double delight for Bangladesh as not only took a sweet revenge of their 4-3 defeat to the same side in the 2003 Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur but also regained their previous number seven ranking in the region. The hosts completed their undefeated run with 16 points from six matches while the day's outcome forced pre-tournament favourites Hong Kong finish at fourth place after Oman won their last game against bottom-side Iran 2-0 to increase their tally to 13 points. Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong both secured 12 points but the former enjoyed a better goal difference after a 9-0 thrashing of Sri Lanka, the biggest victory in the competition, yesterday at the same venue. The four top finishers will join India, Pakistan, South Korea, Malaysia, China and Japan, the automatic qualifiers, for the 10-team 15th Asian Games to be held in Doha in November. The last game eventually turned into a final as Bangladesh needed a draw to clinch the title and Hong Kong a victory. But interestingly the visitors were in defensive mood throughout. Having failed to use any of their three first-half penalty corners, Bangladesh generated pace in the second half and broke the deadlock on the hour with Shishu elating a small but enthusiastic crowd. Moshiur Rahman dribbled past three Hong Kong defenders outside the D-box before realising the ball for Shishu, who brilliantly pushed the ball home. Eight minutes later, Jimmy was set by a cunning cross from Zahidul Islam Rajon to stun the visitors with a splendid reverse hit. Former Pakistani international Tahir Zaman, who guided Bangladesh as special advisor, said that Bangladesh played according to the plan. "Our target was not to concede a goal in the first half and then generate pace later. They played according to the plan, thanks to two class goals in the latter-stage," said Tahir. "It's fine Bangladesh qualified as champions but they should understand that the level would be totally different in the main competition. The team need to improve in every department and most importantly, they should have better their understanding," he added. Coach Jamal Haider urged for more international games before the Qatar meet. "No doubt the success created an opportunity for us to improve our performance at the Asian level. If we want to make any impression in the main competition we should take massive preparation and undoubtedly there is no alternative to play more international games," he added. Bangladesh custodian Rasel Khan Bappi was adjudged player of the tournament while Hong Kong's Arif Ali was top-scorer with nine goals.
