Maria out of Istanbul Open

Russia's Wimbledon 2004 champion Maria Sharapova was forced to withdraw from next week's Istanbul Open on Friday because she has failed to recover from a right ankle injury.

The 19-year-old had originally replaced American Lindsay Davenport, who is also injured.

"Miss (Maria) Sharapova wrote to the organisers, informing them that her right ankle injury had not healed well enough for her to play in the tournament," read a statement from the organisers.

Sharapova, who won the Indian Wells tournament earlier this year, was unable to play in the WTA tournament in Rome this week because of the injury and also an in-growing toenail.
