Primary teachers end hunger strike

Teachers of non-government primary schools yesterday ended their hunger strike unto death following the assurance from Prime Minister's Political Secretary Harris Chowdhury of realising their one-point demand for job nationalisation within one week.The discussion between the prime minister and representatives of Bangladesh Non-government Primary Teachers Association will be held on June 5 or 6 for realisation of the teachers' demand, Shamsul Alam, president of the association, said after a discussion with Harris Chowdhury at the Prime Minister's Office yesterday evening. Before holding the discussion, Harris Chowdhury went to Muktangon where the teachers had been observing hunger strike since May 28 and offered drink to some of the teachers to mark the end of their fast unto death strike. Following the assurance, the classes in 23,000 non-government primary schools across the country will begin from today, Shamsul Alam said. The non-government primary teachers will go for tough movement again if their demand is not met within seven days, he added. BRTC Chairman Taimur alam Khandakar, Prime Minister's Assistant Private Secretary Shamsul Alam, and Assistant Press Secretary Mushfiqul Fazal Ansari were also present during the discussion.
