CJA condemns attacks on newsmen

The Bangladesh chapter of Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) at a meeting yesterday expressed deep concern over the recent spate of attacks on journalists.

The meeting adopted a resolution condemning the violence against the media and urged the government to take appropriate action to protect the rights of journalists and freedom of press.

The resolution noted with concern that journalists have recently been attacked in Chittagong and Kushtia, said a press release.

On May 29, a gang of miscreants reportedly hired by local BNP MP Shahidul Islam attacked the rally of journalists in Kushtia, leaving about 24, including Editor of the Bangladesh Observer and ex-president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, injured.

The meeting urged the government to arrest those responsible for the attack and punish them as per laws of the land.

The meeting observed that the violence against the media was designed to stop the press from telling the truth and exposing corruption and abuse of power. "Such attacks undermine freedom of press and democratic values," the meeting said.
