Forensic expert got threat calls for days
Family suspects he was killed in planned road accident

A son of Prof Akteruzzaman, head of the Department of Forensic Medicine at Dhaka Medical College, filed a case with Lalbagh Police Station on Friday alleging that his father might have been 'killed' in a planned road accident.

Dr Arifuzzaman, the complainant, also mentioned in the FIR (first information report) that unidentified people had been threatening his father over mobile phone for several days, creating obstacles to his professional duties.

Akteruzzaman was fatally injured when a jeep hit his motorbike near Eden College at about 1:00pm on Friday and dragged him around 15 yards. He succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital about two and a half hours later.

Meanwhile, Advocate Alena Khan, executive director of Bangladesh Society for Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR), yesterday said Akteruzzaman told her a day before his death that he was facing tremendous pressure from some influential quarters for manipulating autopsy reports in several incidents.

"He told me on June 15 that in his 34 years of service, he never faced such tremendous pressure from any quarters for preparing autopsy reports as dictated by them. As he narrated his plight, his eyes were filled with tears," Alena told The Daily Star yesterday.

In this connection, the professor mentioned the case of murdered schoolboy Jisan of Sutrapur, Alena said. "He also told me there are other sensational cases for which he is facing pressure but he did not disclose instantly details of the other cases."

Alena also said Akteruzzaman had planned to submit an application to the health secretary mentioning the threats and troubles he was facing in doing his professional duties. And she was supposed to collect a copy of the application from him today.

"Possibly a copy of the application is still in one of his (professor) office files," Alena added.

Akteruzzaman was heading a four-member medical board for DNA test of a former top police official who claimed parenthood of 14 children.

PROTEST
Meanwhile, doctors, students and staff of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital brought out a silent procession in the city demanding proper investigation into the incident and trial of the killer driver of the jeep.

They asked for investigation to ascertain whether the DMC teacher was killed in a planned way or it was a case of death in an accident.

The procession started from the DMCH premises and ended near the Jatiya Press Club.

DRIVER REMANDED
Detained driver of the jeep Monjur Alam was placed on a two-day police remand yesterday for questioning.

Lalbagh police produced him before the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka, seeking a seven-day remand.

Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Sub-inspector Delwar Hossain said yesterday evening he was yet to start interrogating Monjur, and had nothing to say at this stage.

Meanwhile, police identified the owner of the jeep as Tareq uj-Jaman, owner of Indoser Buying House at Kafrul in the city.
