Coalition men amassed huge wealth to buy votes: Hasina

Suspecting a vote-rigging plot of the coalition government, opposition leader Sheikh Hasina yesterday alleged that it amassed a huge amount of money to buy vote in the forthcoming general elections.

Hasina came up with the remarks during her meeting with the Awami League (AL) leader from Noakhali, Feni and Laxmipur at her Dhanmondi residence.

Presidents and general secretaries of district, upazila and municipality units attended the meeting.

Hasina further alleged that the government established a reign of terror and turned the country into a haven of militants, anti-human-right activities and oppression on the journalists.

"After destroying country's image, they have appointed lobbyists squandering $ 75,000 per month, she told her party men while taking stock of the country's situation.

The former prime minister said if voted to power, her party will restore peace, bring the prices of essentials and fuel oils down to the reach of common people and solve water and power crises.

Hasina also criticised the coalition government for destroying the judiciary, parliament, administration and the Public Service Commission.

"There is no alternative to reforms in the caretaker government and the Election Commission (EC) to ensure a free, fair and neutral election," the opposition leader said.

She said the AL-led 14-party opposition combine will continue its agitation to compel the government to accept the proposals for electoral reform.

She blasted the government for what she said their continuous torture on the minority community and journalists. Hasina said the government doesn't believe in secularism and liberal politics; it believes in communalism and parochial politics.

She asked the grassroots-level leaders and workers to prepare for the upcoming general elections, settling all misunderstandings.
