The Dhaka readers continued their domination in The Daily Star-Rangs Toshiba World Cup Quiz competition with 22-year-old Afsana Islam winning the first prize of Round 3 -- a 21inch Toshiba Bomba Flat TV, in Sylhet on Tuesday. For Afsana, a student living in West Rampura of the capital, the success ensured that lady luck smiled on a lady for the second successive occasion after Azimpur's Sumi Akhter bagged the laurel in the second round draw at Khulna. A near-capacity audience at the Saifur Rahman Auditorium in the holy city was urging on for a local winner from the very beginning of the colourful ceremony, but unfortunately their cry went in vain. Chief guest Sylhet Mayor Badoruddin Ahmed Kamran, however, consoled them before picking up the first prize smilingly saying 'the people of Sylhet loves to do something for others'. Gazi Md. Asaduzzaman Kabir, a 33-year-old civil service holder who lives in Demra, ran way with the second prize, a good-looking Toshiba refrigerator but Jaynal Abedin, a 24-year-old Rajshahi University student, dashed Dhaka's hopes of a clean sweep of all the top prizes as he grabbed the third prize -- a Toshiba washing machine. Much to the delight of the cheering crowd, there was a raffle draw for the audience who instantly won two canon cameras and five Toshin irons. The lively ceremony, chaired by the Editor and Publisher of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam, was graced by lt. col. (retd) Moklesur Rahman, general manager of sponsors Rangs Industries Limited, and a host of local elites -- Faruque Ahmed Mesbah, president of Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Azizul Malik Chowdhury, vice-president of District Sports Association, Dewan Golam Rabbani Chowdhury, president of Sylhet District Bar Association, Abdul Hai Khan, former president of the bar association, Dr. Jamil Ahmed Chowdhury, registrar of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and Ranjit Das, a former national football and hockey player.
