Thai Airways expects big turnaround in second quarter

Flag carrier Thai Airways International expects a big turnaround in the quarter ending June 30 compared to its 117-million-dollar loss in the same period last year, executives said Tuesday.

Despite high oil prices and stronger Thai baht, the airline's vice president for commercial Vasing Kittikul said aggressive promotion packages would help the carrier improve its financial performance over 2005.

In the wake of the Indian Ocean tsunami, Thai posted its worst-ever loss of almost five billion baht in three months to June 2005. The period is normally low season for the tourism industry.

"We will break even this quarter and have a better performance for the whole year than in 2005," Vasing told reporters.

"This year we have ongoing celebrations for the king's 60th year on the throne. Promotion campaigns are being launched in 25 countries that have royal families who visited Thailand for the event, mainly Japan," he said.
