Hasina trashes PM's assurance over presidency

Sharply reacting to Wednesday's speech of the prime minister in parliament about the speculations over the presidency, opposition leader Sheikh Hasina has said the prime minister does the opposite of what she speaks.

"In her speech, the prime minister told the nation to wait for another 15 days…we'll wait for 15 days to see what magic she has to show," she said.

Hasina, also the president of the Awami League (AL), was exchanging views with her party's grassroots-level leaders from Pirojpur, Patuakhali and Barguna districts in Barisal division at AL's Dhanmondi office yesterday.

She discussed with them the prevailing political situation in their constituencies, party position, possible party candidates for the forthcoming election and the ongoing anti-government agitation.

Hasina alleged that the prime minister wanted to become president of the country with an evil design to rig the next polls to continue her "misrule". She urged people to remain alert about what she said the prime minister's conspiracy.

The AL chief said her party will not allow any "farcical" election of rigging in the country. She urged people to get ready to rush to the capital to resist such "evil design", if asked.

About Wednesday's verdict in the sensational case for bomb attacks on an Udichi conference in Jessore, the opposition leader deplored that all the accused in the murder case were let off the hook as they belong to the ruling alliance.

To the members of the law enforcement agencies, Hasina said the time has come for them to take the decision whether they will serve the corrupt government in its assuming power further or stand beside the people to establish their basic rights.

Referring to the new national budget passed yesterday, she said the budget has created ample scope for looting public money.

The AL president met the grassroots leaders from 27 organisational units covering 10 constituencies of Pirojpur, Patuakhali and Barguna districts.
