Model UN Session on 'Quality Education, MDGs' ends

The two-day Model United Nations Session 2006 on 'Quality Education and Millennium Development Goals' ended in the city yesterday with a call for working together to attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Campaign for Popular Education (Campe) in association with United Nations Youth and Students' Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) organised the session as part of its programme for raising awareness about MDG. A total of 120 secondary students from 40 schools of Dhaka, Chittagong and Rangpur took part in the session representing different countries. Chairman of University Grants Commission Prof Dr M Asaduzzaman was present as chief guest at the concluding session with Campe Director Rasheda K Chowdhury in the chair. Holy Cross Girls' School and College, which represented Greece in the session, became Champion of the Champions while a total of 18 students received crests and certificates in different criteria. These were quiz competition, best presentation, best regional team, best diplomatic team and best paper. Prof Asaduzzaman handed over the crests to the champions. Speaking on the occasion, he said no nation can develop without quality education which is a must to ensure an education-based society. "It (quality education) is an ingredient of all development," he said, adding, it is not possible to achieve the MDG until the students of whole country receive quality education. He said quality education enlightens people and helps them become an ideal citizen of the country. He also urged the organisers to hold such kind of debates frequently so that the nation gets rational leadership. All participating students received certificates and souvenirs from Rasheda K Chowdhury and Larry Maramis, deputy resident representative of UNDP. UNYSAB President Shaikh Imtiaz and UNIC Officer-in-Charge Kazi Ali Reza also spoke on the occasion.
