Participation of grassroots artists emphasised

Speakers at a meeting titled "Development Drama and Participation of Grassroots Artists" at the Chittagong Press Club auditorium yesterday emphasised on developing the quality of culture and finding out talents at primary level in order to enhance national development.

They urged all to increase the participation of artists from grassroots and to improve their performing skills to implement such cultural development so that they may motivate the common people in different social issues.

Bangladesh Institute of Theatre Arts (Bita), a non-government organisation (NGO), arranged the meeting with Bita Executive Director Shishir Dutta in the chair.

Bita Project Coordinator Saiful Alam presented a survey report in the meeting as part of its 'Showhardo' programme that identified 72 grassroots artists who had been performing successfully at different cultural media like folksong or drama without any training.

The survey was conducted at eleven unions of two upazilas, Patiya and Anowara, and two wards of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) in cooperation with Care Bangladesh.

Regional programme manager of Care Bangladesh and female ward commissioner Monwara Begum Moni also spoke on the occasion.

Later, Juldha Sanatanpara Nattya Dal, a group consisting of fishermen, performed a drama titled 'Pather Thikana' that depicted various social problems such as early marriage and dowry.
