BDR protests BSF acts at Amolshid
Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
The BDR yesterday sent a letter to Indian BSF protesting its provocative acts at Amolshid border on Wednesday morning. An official of BDR said the letter also contained a proposal for a flag meeting between the two sides. Villagers who had fled their homesteads after the gunshots traded between the border guards of the two countries are yet to return, local sources said. BDR Commander of 38 Battalion in Sylhet Lt Colonel Abu Tasnim told The Daily Star in the afternoon that they were waiting for a reply from the BSF. The BDR has however enhanced its troops in Zakiganj borders. The two sides had an exchange of over 1800 gunshots for about five hours on Wednesday. Abul Kalam, a villager who sustained bullet wounds, had been admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital for treatment. A tense situation has been prevailing at Uttarkul and Amolshid border out posts since Friday after the BDR men foiled an attempt by the BSF to occupy some farmlands near the border pillar no 1354. The BSF men crossed the river by country boats and tried to occupy the lands but failed in the face of BDR resistance on that day. The two sides traded around 100 gunshots. The 256-acre of land had been under Bangladesh's occupation since 1947 and Bangladeshi nationals had been cultivating the lands since then, said a BDR official.
