Charge sheet filed amid secrecy
Maruf's name dropped


Charge sheet in the sensational Chittagong business magnate also BNP leader Jamal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury murder case was submitted amid secrecy at a police court yesterday afternoon.

The charge sheet that reportedly accused a total of 16 persons including two of the prime accused Kashem Chairman and Shahid Chairman will be submitted before a metropolitan magistrate court today.

Sources said investigation officer of the case, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Inspector Anwar Hossain however did not include Maruf Nizam's name in the charge sheet. Maruf is brother of Sarwar Jamal Nizam, a ruling party lawmaker from Anwara.

Family members of Jamal Uddin have repeatedly been accusing Maruf Nizam as the mastermind of the whole episode ranging from Jamal's sensational abduction back in July, 2003 to his killing later on.

The charge sheeted accused are Kashem Chairman of Kanchana under Fatikchhari upazila, Shahid Chairman of Anwara Sadar union parishad under Anwara upazila, Sobhan, the driver of the microbus used in the abduction, Kala Mahbub, whose confessions gave law enforcers sensational leads to the recovery of Jamal's skeleton from a remote Fatikchhari forest, Ishaq alias One-piece, Lamba Mahbub, Garrage Kashem, Younus, Shafi and Boli Mansur. Names of six other accused could not be ascertained till writing of this report yesterday night.

Sources said CID inspector Anwar submitted the charge sheet to Assistant Commissioner (Prosecution) Mohammad Abu Taher around 5.00pm yesterday. Sensing presence of journalists there, Anwar soon hid himself into a room to avoid the journalists. He also switched off his mobile phone.

Jamal Uddin was kidnapped on July 24, 2003 while he was going to his residence in Chandgaon from a business firm at Chawk Bazar. He was later killed.

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) dug out his skeleton from a remote village in Fatikchhari on August 24 last year and a DNA test later confirmed that the skeleton was indeed of Jamal Uddin.
