Match factory gutted in fire

Chemicals including sulphur worth about Tk 1 crore and three important machines worth over Tk 1.5 crore were damaged in a fire incident in the automatic chemical mixture machine room of Dada Match Factory at Rupsha Strand Road at 10:30am yesterday.

Fire originating from sparks in the machine room continued for about an hour before four fire brigade units brought it under control, said Deputy General Manager Mahbubul Hossain.

Panicked workers, employees and officials came out of their work places hearing sound of explosion in the machine room containing chemicals.

Production has been suspended due to extensive damage of chemicals and machines, the DGM said, adding that a three-member committee has been formed to probe the cause of fire.

There are 2,000 workers and employees in Dada Match factory that produces 10,000 gross matches a day.
