Staff correspondent, Ctg
The prime accused in sensational Chittagong Arms Case, Hafizur Rahman alias Hafiz, in two separate petitions has alleged inhuman treatment of him and violation of human rights by the Chittagong jail authority and sought intervention from the Metropolitan Special Tribunal in this regard. Following the petitions, Judge AKM Anwar Hossain ordered the jail authority to provide Hafiz with all necessary facilities as per jail code. He also asked the senior jail super to give his explanation regarding the allegations by July 18, sources said yesterday. The court issued its order in writing on Sunday. The petitions were lodged with the court on June 26 and 27. Hafiz was arrested in connection with the biggest arms haul. On the midnight of April 1, 2004, the police seized 10 truckloads of deadly weapons and a huge quantity of ammunition on the Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited (CUFL) jetty in the Karnaphuli river. In his petitions, Hafiz stated that he was kept at a small prison cell at the Chittagong jail along with seven others under inhuman conditions and the cell remains locked 24 hours. Hafiz alleged that he was not even allowed to go outside his cell and has been deprived of treatment facilities. As a result, he was suffering both physically and mentally and his right leg might be paralysed anytime, Hafiz said in his petitions.
