Community pry teachers to go on strike again next month

Bangladesh Community Primary Teachers Association yesterday threatened to close down community schools across the country from August 1 and fast unto death from August 6 if the government does not agree within July 30 to nationalise their jobs. The threat came from a rally at Central Shaheed Minar. Earlier on June 26, the community teachers postponed their fast unto death programme on having assurance from the government that it would soon meet their demand. Addressing the rally yesterday, leaders said the government says it wants to develop the country's education system, but it never seems to be working accordingly. They said the government has a tendency to sidestep the community teachers' demands while fulfilling those of the other teachers' organisations that already enjoy more government facilities. President of the association Habibul Ahsan Bablu, Secretary General Hafizur Rahman, Vice-President Abu Taher and representatives from across the country were present at the meeting. Meanwhile, Shikkhak Karmachari Oikya Jote, a forum of non-government teachers and employees, yesterday announced that it will begin an indefinite sit-in on July 23 at city's Muktangan. The sit-in will continue until the government agrees to meet the demand for 100 of the salaries from public exchequer, read a press release from the organisation. Besides, the Oikya Jote will hold a rally of Dhaka regional unit teachers at Muktangan today. It will also submit memorandums to LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and some other government high-ups to remind them of their electoral pledge to fulfil the teachers' demands. Bangladesh Shikkhak-Karmachari Samonnoy Parishad, another platform of teachers, in a statement yesterday vowed to continue their movement until their demand is met.
