People to resist election engineering: Hasina
Unb, Dhaka
Awami League President Sheikh Hasina yesterday said no election, results of which have been fixed prior to the voting, would be allowed in the country."The alliance government has finalised all the preparations for election engineering to stay in power, but people will resist their evil design," she said and urged the people to remain alert so that the government could not 'hijack' their mandate in the next polls. Hasina was addressing the teachers, employees and students of Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University who called on her at her Dhanmondi office. "The four-party alliance government knows it very well that people will not vote for them because of their misdeeds and misrule," the AL chief said. "If there is free and fair election, people will vote for Awami League," she hoped. Referring to the militants' activities in the country, Hasina said militancy must be eliminated to establish peace and discipline in society. "And militancy would be eliminated with the removal of the alliance government." Pointing to the capture of the JMB kingpins, she alleged that their arrests were nothing but a stage-managed drama, as is evident from the "warm hospitality" given to them by the government. Hasina vowed that her party would always resist those who are against the people. She blamed the alliance government for the price hike of essentials and alleged that the government had grabbed 2.86 lakh crores of taka from the people during its rule. She accused the ruling alliance for increasing the prices of essentials through syndication. "I don't believe the government cannot control the prices if it really wants," the opposition leader said. She also blamed the ruling alliance for tarnishing the country's image abroad. AL leaders Abdul Mannan and Dr Abdur Razzaq MP, Prof Shahadat Ullah, the first vice-chancellor of Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University, Dr Nazrul Islam, Dr Shahidur Rashed Bhuiyan, Hazrat Ali, ASM Nasir Uddin and Abdul Hye also spoke on the occasion.
