'Set up day care centres at workplaces'

Speakers at a seminar yesterday stressed the need for setting up day care centres at workplaces where most of the workers are women to ensure early childhood development and women's contribution to national economy.The government spends a lot of money on women's education but most of them have to be at home for caring their children, causing a massive loss to overall economy, they said. Phulki, a social organisation working for the rights of women and their children, organised the seminar entitled 'Child care will ensure women's participation in job market' with a view to establish the rights of working women. The seminar was organised in association with Manusher Jonno and Plan Bangladesh at the Spectra Convention Centre in the city. Haider Wasim Yaqub, programme support manager of Plan Bangladesh, said women's participation in the job market will help not only a family but also the country as a whole. A day care centre can help build children as future asset providing stimulating environment to them, he added. Anisul Haque, former president of BGMEA, called for enacting law to establish day care centre at every workplace for working mothers. Speaking as the chief guest Kamal Uddin Siddique, principal secretary to the prime minister, termed the day care centre as the demand of time for working mothers. He laid emphasis on action plan and brainstorming workshop to make people aware of the importance of day care centre. Suraiya Haque, executive director, and Saber Raza Karim, president of Phulki, also spoke. Representatives of different organisations, including Brac and Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum, attended the seminar.
