Following the verdict, Sunny and others began chanting different songs loudly and they maintained that they would not obey the verdict of the 'worldly' court. Rab produced Sunny and six others before the court at 11:30am amid tight security while additional police forces were deployed on the court premises to avoid any untoward incident. Metropolitan Public Prosecutor (PP) Abdullah Mahmud Hassan and Assistant PP Shahidul Islam Sardar appeared for the state. Sunny, younger brother of JMB chief Abdur Rahman, AHM Shamim, 23, Zakaria alias Jewel, 21, Nur Azam Siddique alias Yeasir, 27, Belal Hossain alias Tamim, 21, and Akramul Islam, 23, were given three years' RI for possessing 700 capacitors. The court, in another verdict, sentenced the same accused except Sunny to a 17-year RI for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition. Earlier, on April 20, the same court sentenced Sunny to a 37-year RI in the same case, as he pleaded guilty before the court. A Barisal court, on February 9, also sentenced Sunny to a 40-year RI in a case under the Explosive Substances Act while a Jhalakathi court sentenced him to death for killing two judges in Jhalakathi on November 14 last year. The court yesterday acquitted Aleya Ferdous, 27, wife of Nur Azam Siddique alias Yeasir, as the charge brought against her was not proved. In the verdict, the judge said the charges against Sunny and five others filed under the Explosive Substances Act and the Arms Act were proved beyond doubt and they have been convicted. Earlier, the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 53 prosecution witnesses in two cases in three workdays that began on June 6. Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested five of them on September 8 last year from an East Bashabo house, which was rented by Sunny to coordinate the August 17 countrywide serial blasts. Law enforcers believe that Sunny had narrowly escaped arrest during that operation. Rab's seizure from the house include one sawn-off rifle, one revolver with a bullet, 700 capacitors, 60 CDs, 92 books, four audio cassettes on 'jihad', 17 masks made of black cloth, one computer, two printers and 10 floppy disks. Sunny, also a member of JMB's top tier Majlish-e-Shura, masterminded the August 17 blasts. He was arrested from Tejgaon Polytechnic Institute on December 13 last year. Rab filed the two cases with Sabujbagh Police Station on the day of his arrest. Previously, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on October 10 last year submitted charge sheet against Sunny and six others. CHARGE FRAMED AGAINST SUNNY AND THREE OTHERS The same court framed charges against Sunny, his friend Fariduzzaman Swapan, JMB regional commander of Gazipur Enayetullah Jewel, Kamrul and Alamgir in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act with Sabujbagh Police Station on December 14 last year.
