Steel mill found stealing gas worth Tk 50 lakh a yr

The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) magistracy in a drive against illegal consumption of gas here yesterday unearthed an incident of stealing gas worth around Tk 50 lakh a year by a steel re-rolling mill at Nasirabad Industrial Area.

The mobile court detected the theft by Dowlatpur Steel Re-rolling Mill, set up on around two-acres of land in the area.

It was stealing gas through illegal connection from the main supply line of Bakharabad Gas System Limited (BGSL) using 450-feet GI pipe for the last five years.

The mobile court disconnected the illegal lines, sealed off the mill and seized 150-tonnes of MS rods from the spot.

The BGSL personnel and Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) force assisted the mobile court led by magistrate Mohammed Munir Chowdhury.

It is learned that the gas connection of the mill was disconnected on charge of arrear bills in 2001. Then the mill owner illegally took connection of his line and used it till the date.
