Songs of rain at Bengal Shilpalaya

On the first eve of Srabon, the second month of Bangla rainy season Borsha, singers rendered Tagore songs on the monsoon. These seasonal songs fall under 'Prakriti' section of Gitabitan, Tagore's main and final compilation of songs. Though the songs presented at the musical soiree featured the rainy season, these were not mere descriptions of natural beauty. Rather they reflected the rich emotional life of Bengalis, such as love and admiration against the backdrop of a rainy day.

Fahim Hossain Chowdhury, Shama Rahman, Mahiuzzaman Chowdhury, Laisa Ahmed Lisa and Tania Mannan were the singers at the musical soiree titled Badolo Diner Gaan arranged by Bengal Shilpalaya on July 16. The function was a part of the four-day musical programme arranged by the organisation, featuring classical music, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Sangeet and songs of three poets. The singers presented both popular as well as not frequently rendered Tagore songs at the soiree.

Tania Mannan was the first singer of the evening. She rendered Amar din phuralo, Ei srabono bela badolo jhora, Aaj jemon kore gaichhe akash, Poob hawate dey dola and Pagla hawar badol dine. Her presentation of the romantic song Pagla hawar was appealing.

Fahim Hossain Chowdhury presented songs that speak of gloomy rainy days evoking pathos. The songs he rendered were Ami ki gaan gabo je, Aamar je din bheshe gechhe, E ki gobhir bani elo, Aji tomaye abar and Emono dine tare bola jay. His stentorian voice modulation of the melancholy tunes touched the audience.

The third singer of the musical soiree was Shama Rahman. She rendered Gahono rate srabono dhara, Aaji godhuli lagone, Megher pore megh jomechhe, Mone holo jeno periye elem and Nilonjon chhaya.

Aashar kotha hote aaj, Aaji srabono ghono, Borshonmondrito andhokare, Eshogo jele diye jao and Shoghono gahono ratree were the songs presented by Mahiuzzaman Chowdhury.

Laisa Ahmed Lisa was the last singer of the evening. Her presentations of Chitto amar haralo, Aaj sraboner purnimate, Swapne amar mone holo, Ogo santali chhele and Osru bhora bedona were enjoyable.
