BWDB projects help produce addl 90 lakh mt food last fiscal

The irrigation projects of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) helped produce additional 90lakh metric tons food during last fiscal year.This was sated at the 21st Executive Committee Meeting of the BWDB at its head office with Water Resources and Commerce Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed in the chair. The meeting was told that the BWDB implemented 74 projects in last five years, while a total of Tk 7000 crore was given for implementation of another 51 new projects and 42 revised projects during the same period. The meeting was also informed that a total of Tk 746 crore was given for 72 projects in FY 2005-06. It was told at the meeting that Tk 956 crore was sanctioned during the current fiscal for implementing 54 development projects and 26 other projects under the ADP. The feasibility study for Ganga Barrage will start soon and the tender process for construction of office building for the Water Board is to be completed by next month. Meeting sources said Dhaka Eastern Bypass Road, designed to free the capital city from floods has been finalised and it would be handed over to the authorities concerned by July next year.
