JCD-Shibir clash at Dinajpur Medical College
60 injured


At least 60 activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) were injured following violent clashes between the two student organisations at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital yesterday.

Skirmishes continued between the JCD and Shibir late into the night and spread across Dinajpur town. The clashes spread to Munshipara, Balubari, Charubabu Mor and Maddhya Balubari according to police sources.

Witnesses claimed police joined Shibir activists and attacked JCD men.

Dinajpur Medical College sources said 10-15 JCD men swooped on Shibir activists around 4:00pm at a dormitory room, leaving at least three of them injured.

The injured were identified as Golam Faruque, 25, president of Dinajpur Medical College Shibir unit, Abdus Shakur, 25, general secretary and Imran, 22. They are under treatment at Dinajpur Sadar Hospital.

Shibir brought out a protest procession on the campus following the attack. Around 5:30pm, 60-70 ICS activists of Dinajpur Medical College, Dinajpur Government University College and district Shibir unit attacked JCD activists inside a medical college dormitory leaving at least 17 JCD men injured.

Eight of the critically injured were sent to Dinajpur Sadar Hospital. The critically injured were identified as Nazrul Islam, 22, Khokon, 24, Mosiur, 24, Sajib, 21, Kaysar, 22, Sraban, 22, Rajib, 22 and Rajib, 21. The identities of other injured students could not be known.

During the attack, the Shibir activists ransacked furniture and smashed windowpanes of at least 20 rooms of the dormitory.

The Shibir cadres then attacked Dinajpur Sadar Hospital around 5:45pm and ransacked the operational theatre (OT), surgery ward and the outdoor section of the hospital causing panic among the patients. Hospital sources said most patients left the hospital following the clashes.

On contact, Rafiqul Islam, acting principal of Dinajpur Medical College, said police have been deployed on the campus soon after the incident to prevent further untoward incidents.

Students of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital alleged that Md Zahurul Islam, provost of the dormitory, stayed inactive during the attack.
