Militants to be used against AL in caretaker rule
Fears Hasina

Opposition Leader Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed her apprehension that the BNP-Jamaat alliance might use the militant forces against Awami League (AL) during the period of caretaker government.

"They may use the militants to scare the voters in the next parliamentary election so that people can't go to the polling booths to cast votes in favour of their candidates," she said.

The AL president made the remarks while exchanging views with the party's grassroots level leaders of Satkhira district at her Dhanmondi office.

Hasina demanded transparent ballot boxes in every polling booth across the country, saying that Awami League wants free, fair and credible elections.

She urged the people to get united to resist the "evil design of the government" to return to power.

Alleging that the militants have already established a strong network across the country, Hasina demanded of the government to locate the training camps of the militants and catch them.

She was highly critical of Jamaat-e-Islami and alleged that every militant has a Jamaat background and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Criticising the alliance government for "not honouring its pre-election commitment" to the teachers' community, the AL chief said although the government had pledged to nationalise the services of the teachers, it is now dilly-dallying in implementing their demand.

The AL president urged the party's grassroots level leaders to strengthen the party in their respective areas.

Presidents and general secretaries of nine AL organisational units of Satkhira district that covers five parliamentary constituencies exchanged views with the party chief on the prevailing situation in the country, party's position, probable party candidates for the next polls and the ongoing anti-government movement.

Syeda Zohra Tajuddin, Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Motia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim MP, Obaidul Kader, Abdul Mannan and Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury Liton MP were present at the meeting.
