SUST reopens tomorrow amid strike call

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) will reopen tomorrow after its closure for about three months.

But a tense situation is prevailing on the campus as the All-Party Students' Action Committee (APSAC), an opposition backed students alliance, on Sunday called an indefinite strike.

Meanwhile, students have started returning to campus following reopening of dormitories as per decision taken at the Syndicate meeting held on July 24. Police, in presence of the authorities, are checking the students' identity (ID) cards at the gates.

The dormitory gates will be closed after 11 pm for security reasons.

The students' action committee has been demanding immediate withdrawal of Vice-Chancellor Prof Musleh Uddin Ahmed.

Opposition AL-led 14-party Alliance also joined the agitation against the VC while the ruling alliance men extended support to the VC.

The Syndicate which kept 'secret' its decisions at the meeting also formed a 7-member committee to probe into the campus incidents from May 12 to May14. The probe body is headed by Prof Habibul Ahsan, Dean of Life Science.

The committee has been asked to submit report within three weeks of its formation. Besides, restrictions have been imposed on political activities on the campus for six months more. Moreover, police will remain posted on the campus to ensure congenial atmosphere.

The university was closed sine die following death of a student in police firing on May 14. VC Prof Muslehuddin Ahmed was also forced to resign amid the all party students' agitation on the same day. Before his resignation, the students set fire to official documents, furniture and vehicles at the VC's house. The VC was compelled to leave the campus after handing over a resignation letter to students in the afternoon the same day.

However, he managed to return to campus on July 5 under police protection in presence of JCD cadres. Since then, the opposition backed teachers and student organisations had been demanding his withdrawal.

A silent procession was brought out on the campus on the day of Syndicate meeting and a meeting was held demanding withdrawal of the Vice Chancellor. Former president of SUST Dr Akhtarul Islam chaired the meeting.

The teachers also demanded stoppage of 'appointment Trade.' SUST authorities was forced to suspend the interview for appointment and promotion of teachers in two departments scheduled to be held on July 23 morning in face of 4-hour sit-in demonstration by AL and left leaning teachers' group.

JCD and Shibir also took out separate processions and held meetings on the campus. The Shahjalal University Associate Employees Association also held a meeting on the campus.

Sammilita Chhatra Sangram Parishad led by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) went on agitation protesting the Syndicate decisions and terming the VC illegal and unwanted.

They took out processions and held meetings and called an indefinite strike from date of reopening of SUST.

Yesterday, they held a press conference at Sylhet Press Club yesterday and urged all to make the strike a success.

They also threatened to resist the move to reopen the university under the present VC.

The demands include appointment of a new VC, judicial probe into the incidents happened on May 12 and 14, punitive measures against those responsible for the incidents, compensation to SUST student Shamim who was killed in police firing on May12 and to those who sustained wounds on the days, punitive measures against those responsible for attack on newsmen, trial of accomplices of the corrupt VC and scrapping the decisions taken up at the Syndicate meeting chaired by the 'ousted' VC.

Sylhet district and city chapters of 14-party alliance at a meeting on Sunday night extended their support to the students' strike from tomorrow.

The leaders of Sylhet district and city units of the ruling alliance, in a statement on Sunday, called upon all to refrain from any activity aimed at 'destroying' the university.
