Janmastami today

The Hindus celebrate today Janmastami -- one of their most festive celebrations commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna.

Krishna is regarded as the epitome of transcendental qualities in the Hindu mythology. His mission was to free the earth from evil, destroy the wrongdoers and protect the pious.

The day is a public holiday in the country.

The traditional Janmastami procession from the Dhakeshwari Temple will be brought out at 3:00pm where thousands are likely to take part. The procession will end at Bahadur Shah Park after marching through different parts of the capital.

Different religious organisations have arranged elaborate programmes including prayers of Lord Krishna, puja, Geeta Jagna, Kirtan, dance, discussion, drama, rally and peace processions.

Tight security has already been enforced around the festival venues and temples.

A Geeta jagna will be held at Dhakeshwari Temple at 8:00am today for peace and prosperity of the country.

Mahanagar Sarbajanin Puja Committee, which leads the historic rally from Dhakeshwari Temple, has arranged three-day programmes on the occasion.

The committee will also arrange Kirtan at 5:00pm tomorrow and a discussion at 5:00pm on August 18.

Sree Chaitanya Shikkha and Sangskritik Sangha has organised five-day programmes including quiz competition, discussion, cultural programme and Kirtan at the Jagannath Hall of Dhaka University to celebrate the day.

President Iajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina in separate messages greeted the Hindus on the occasion of Janmastami.
